Writer. Reporter. Wanderer.

Alex hitchikingI’m Alex Pickett — an award-winning journalist from St. Petersburg, Florida.

I’ve written for the New Haven Advocate, the Chandler Independent, the Des Moines Register’s Juice publication, the Arizona Republic and Creative Loafing, Tampa Bay’s alternative weekly.

As a reporter, I investigated zoos, police departments and homelessness. I have written award-winning features on a prisoner serving a life sentence and the effects of gentrification on a historic African-American neighborhood. I’ve also hitchhiked the state of Florida, spent early mornings exploring hobo camps, and covered midget wrestling. I’m one of only a handful of American reporters to be waterboarded.

I take my own photos, edit audio and video, and dabble in fictional short stories.

I’ve lived throughout the United States and South Korea. I’ve visited 11 countries already and hope to hit the rest sometime in my life.
